Estimate for the 2026 tax year. Married Filing Separately filers face an additional high-income exemption add-back the IRS applies on Form 6251; this calculator uses the simplified phaseout. Figures are estimates, not tax advice.

How the Alternative Minimum Tax works
The Alternative Minimum Tax is a second tax system that runs alongside the regular income tax. Congress created it so that high earners with large deductions and preference items cannot reduce their tax bill below a baseline. You figure your tax twice: once under regular rules, once under AMT rules, and you pay the higher of the two.
The AMT calculation lives on IRS Form 6251. It starts from your regular taxable income, adds back items the regular system allowed, subtracts a flat exemption, and applies a two-rate schedule. If the result, the tentative minimum tax, is larger than your regular tax, the gap becomes your AMT.
How AMT is calculated step by step
The process moves through five steps. First, take your regular taxable income from Form 1040 line 15. Second, add back AMT items: the SALT deduction (or the standard deduction if you claimed it), the ISO exercise spread, private activity bond interest, and certain depreciation differences. The total is your Alternative Minimum Taxable Income (AMTI).
Third, subtract the AMT exemption for your filing status, reduced if your AMTI is high enough to trigger the phaseout. Fourth, apply the 26% and 28% rates to the remaining AMT base to get the tentative minimum tax. Fifth, compare that figure to your regular tax: if the tentative minimum tax is higher, the difference is the AMT you owe.
2026 AMT exemptions, phaseouts, and OBBBA changes
For 2026 the AMT exemption is $90,100 for Single and Head of Household filers, $140,200 for Married Filing Jointly and Qualifying Surviving Spouse, and $70,100 for Married Filing Separately. The exemption starts to shrink once AMTI passes $500,000 (most filers) or $1,000,000 (joint filers).
The One Big Beautiful Bill changed two things that matter here. It returned the phaseout thresholds to their 2018 levels, and it raised the phaseout rate so the exemption now drops 50 cents for every dollar of AMTI above the threshold, up from 25 cents. Together these changes erase the exemption faster and pull more high earners into AMT territory.
Common AMT triggers and how to plan around them
The classic trigger is exercising incentive stock options and holding the shares: the bargain element is invisible to the regular tax but counts in full for AMT. Large SALT deductions in high-tax states are another common cause, since that deduction is added straight back into AMTI. Private activity bond interest, normally tax-free, is also a preference item.
Planning options include spreading ISO exercises across multiple years, exercising early when the spread is small, and tracking the Minimum Tax Credit that timing-based AMT generates so you can recover it in later years. Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about amt calculator
What is the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)?
The Alternative Minimum Tax is a parallel federal tax system that sets a floor on what high-income taxpayers pay. You calculate your tax under regular rules and again under AMT rules, then pay whichever is higher. The AMT removes or limits certain deductions and preference items that the regular system allows.
How do I know if I owe AMT for 2026?
You owe AMT only when your tentative minimum tax is higher than your regular tax liability. The extra you pay is the difference between the two. Form 6251 is the IRS worksheet that compares both figures. This calculator runs that comparison once you enter your income, add-backs, and regular tax.
What are the 2026 AMT exemption amounts?
For the 2026 tax year the AMT exemption is $90,100 for Single and Head of Household filers, $140,200 for Married Filing Jointly and Qualifying Surviving Spouse, and $70,100 for Married Filing Separately. The exemption shrinks once your AMTI passes the phaseout threshold for your filing status.
How does exercising incentive stock options (ISOs) trigger AMT?
When you exercise ISOs and hold the shares, the spread between the fair market value and the strike price is not taxed under the regular system, but it is an AMT preference item. A large spread can push your AMTI well above your regular taxable income and create an AMT bill even if no cash changed hands.
What income and deductions get added back to calculate AMTI?
Common add-backs include the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, the standard deduction if you claimed it, the ISO exercise spread, interest from private activity bonds, and certain accelerated depreciation differences. AMTI starts from your regular taxable income and adds these items back, so AMTI is never lower than taxable income.
What are the 26% and 28% AMT tax rates, and when does the 28% rate apply?
The AMT base (AMTI after the exemption) is taxed at 26% up to $244,500, and at 28% on any amount above that. For Married Filing Separately the 28% rate begins at $122,250. Only the portion above the threshold is taxed at 28%, not the whole base.
Did the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBBA) change AMT for 2026?
Yes. OBBBA returned the exemption phaseout thresholds to 2018 levels ($500,000 for most filers, $1,000,000 for joint filers) and raised the phaseout rate from 25 cents to 50 cents per dollar of AMTI above the threshold. Both changes pull more high earners into AMT than recent years.
Can I recover the AMT I pay through the Minimum Tax Credit?
Often, yes. AMT caused by timing items such as an ISO exercise can generate a Minimum Tax Credit you carry forward to future years. In years when your regular tax exceeds your tentative minimum tax, the credit reduces your regular tax. AMT from permanent items like the SALT add-back generally is not recoverable.
