Tax47 vs TaxSlayer: File your taxes

TaxSlayer: File your taxes prepares and e-files federal and state returns. See how it compares with Tax47 on cost, sign-in and estimates before you file.

Disclosure: Tax47 is our app. This comparison is written honestly, including the places where TaxSlayer is the better fit. Ratings and pricing are from the US App Store as of September 2026.

Quick answer

TaxSlayer: File your taxes by TaxSlayer LLC is a filing app that prepares and e-files federal and state returns. It has been on the App Store since 2013 and is on Android too. The federal return is free “if you qualify”, and the listing pitches that at single or married filers with a W-2 and no dependents. The store page lists no prices for the paid editions or for a state return.

Tax47, listed as “Tax Calculator USA - Tax47”, estimates your federal tax before you file: your refund or balance due, withholding, credits, and your taxes before and after the One Big Beautiful Bill. It is free to download and needs no account, but it does not e-file.

If you want to prepare and e-file your return on your phone, pick TaxSlayer: File your taxes. If you want to know where you stand before you file, pick Tax47. Plenty of people will do both: estimate during the year, then file in the spring.

Where TaxSlayer: File your taxes wins

It files the return. Tax47 does not. TaxSlayer prepares your federal and state returns and e-files them. The listing says the federal return is free if you qualify, and that free option includes the student loan interest deduction and education credits. Switching is built in: you can upload a return from another service and the app imports the data. Before you file, it runs a year-over-year comparison. Tax47 stops at the estimate.

People to ask, and guarantees in writing. The listing says unlimited phone and email support come with every edition, and Premium adds live chat and Ask a Tax Pro, one-on-one help from a tax professional. It describes its staff as enrolled agents and IRS-certified experts. It offers help with IRS inquiries for up to one year on Classic and with an audit for up to three years on Premium. Returns are backed by a 100% accuracy guarantee and a max refund guarantee. Tax47’s listing mentions none of these.

A long record and a Spanish option. TaxSlayer has been on the App Store since 2013 and averages 4.76 across 20,600 US ratings, against Tax47’s 4.88 from 16. It works in English and Spanish, while Tax47 is English only. Reviewers say it is easy to use, and long-time users say they have filed with it for years.

No ads and no tracking declared. Neither store flags ads for TaxSlayer: the App Store age rating has no advertising note, and Google Play does not show “Contains ads”. TaxSlayer’s privacy label declares no data used to track you. Tax47 has no ads declared on the App Store, but its Google Play listing says “Contains ads”. Its App Store label also reads “Data Used to Track You: Identifiers”.

Where Tax47 wins

TaxSlayer’s listing is about filing. Tax47 is about knowing before you file. TaxSlayer’s current description does not mention a refund estimator, and the last release note that did is from January 2022. Tax47 shows your estimated refund or, if you owe, how much to set aside before the deadline. It also checks whether your paychecks withheld enough and shows your effective tax rate.

The One Big Beautiful Bill, and what-ifs. TaxSlayer’s listing does not mention the law. Its last iOS update, in January 2026, reads “Get ready to file your 2025 taxes!” Tax47 compares your taxes before and after the One Big Beautiful Bill (P.L. 119-21), including the deductions for tips, overtime and car loan interest on US-assembled vehicles. You can also save several calculations and compare them to see how a raise, a new job or a withholding change would move your refund.

No account to open. TaxSlayer needs a sign-in, and its privacy label links Purchases, Financial Info, Contact Info, User Content, Identifiers and Sensitive Info to your identity. To be fair, a filing app needs much of that to do its job. If all you want is an estimate, Tax47 runs its calculations on the device without an account, and its label has no Data Linked to You section.

Pricing

  • Tax47 is free to download. Pro is $4.99 a week or billed yearly, and the App Store lists annual Pro entries from $1.99 to $29.99. There is a 7-day free trial.
  • TaxSlayer: File your taxes by TaxSlayer LLC is free to download. The listing says you can “start, prepare, and file your federal tax return for free if you qualify”, and pitches that at single or married filers with a W-2 and no dependents. It names the Classic, Premium and Self-Employed editions and the Ask a Tax Pro and Audit Defense add-ons, but the store page lists no filing prices and no price for a state return. The listing also offers to deduct your filing fees from your federal refund instead of having you pay up front. Fees and unexpected charges are a recurring complaint in reviews, including from people who expected to file for free and were charged.

Neither store page gives a yearly total you can check: TaxSlayer lists no filing prices, and Tax47 lists a weekly plan beside annual entries from $1.99 to $29.99.

Which one should you pick?

Pick TaxSlayer: File your taxes if you want to prepare and e-file your federal and state return on your phone, your return is simple enough for the free federal option, you want phone and email support or a tax professional to ask, or you would rather work in Spanish. One caveat: reviewers say the app can fail to download or print a finished return, and some of them say the website worked when the app did not.

Pick Tax47 if you want to know your refund or balance due before you file, check whether your withholding is on track, see your taxes before and after the One Big Beautiful Bill, or compare what-if scenarios, all without an account. Tax47 is newer: it has been on the App Store since 2025, and its 4.88 comes from 16 US ratings. TaxSlayer has 20,600.

Weighing more than these two? Our tax calculator app roundup puts the estimators and the filing apps side by side. For a quick number before you file, our free tax refund estimator and W-4 withholding calculator run in the browser, with nothing to download and no account.
